About Atlantic University Atlantic University offers a graduate program in transpersonal studies that is designed specifically for adults interested in exploring life and themselves, using innovative learning methods. This program is unique in that it introduces the student to the multiple dimensions of holistic living and encourages the process of personal growth. The degree program is available as a distance-learning program with limited, optional residential studies available. The interdisciplinary nature of the program provides students with a variety of learning experiences as well as exposure to alternative methods of education. Additional information about the school and its current curriculum is available at http://www.atlanticuniv.edu/. At the present time, the University is positioning itself to expand its offerings into professional Continuing Education and take advantage of technological advances in online education. It is hoped that an aggressive foray into professional CEs will lead to additional course and degree programs available through online education. Atlantic University has a unique history. The university was founded in 1930 by Edgar Cayce, along with a group of supporters and talented faculty. Chartered on April 29, 1930 as an undergraduate liberal arts program with a holistic perspective, the university became the first university in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Unfortunately, due to the economic conditions prevailing in the United States at the time, the university remained open for only two years. Nevertheless, the vision remained alive in the minds of several people who kept the charter active with a sense of expectancy that the University would reopen its doors when the time was proper. Through the 1970s and into the early 1980s, interested persons met to lay the groundwork for the rebirth of the University with a new mission, scope, and purpose. In the fall semester of 1985, Atlantic University reopened as a graduate school with a curriculum focusing on the newly developing interdisciplinary field of transpersonal studies. By 1990, the State Council on Higher Education of Virginia (SCHEV) granted the University a license to confer the degree of Master of Arts in transpersonal studies. This distance-learning degree program is accredited through the accrediting commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). Atlantic University is located on the campus of Edgar Cayce's Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) in Virginia Beach, Virginia. |
