The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has over 30 faculty members, provides service in all major subspecialties of anatomic and clinical pathology, and is active in basic science, translational, and clinical research. Educational programs include a 14-person residency program and specialty fellowships in hematopathology, cytopathology, and surgical pathology. The University of California, Davis, Medical Center (UCDMC) and the School of Medicine (SOM) are located in Sacramento, the capitol of California, with a metropolitan population of 1.5 million people. UCDMC is a 576 bed academic medical center, with the distinction of having an NCI-designated Cancer Center and is one of the nation's "Top 100 Hospitals." In addition, Construction is being completed for a new addition which will add hospital beds, operating rooms and emergency treatment stations. Clinical affiliations exist with the adjacent Shriners Children’s Hospital of Northern California; the Mather Veterans Administration Hospital, Sacramento, and the Travis Air Force Base, Fairfield, California.
