The University of Sydney is a community committed to maximising the potential of everyone who works and studies here. We are unique among Australia’s leading universities in the breadth of disciplines we offer, providing our staff and students with wide opportunities for personal development and cross-disciplinary study that delivers solutions for the benefit of the nation and the wider world.
Located close to the heart of Australia’s largest and most international city, our central campus has been transformed by the recent completion of state-of-the-art teaching, research and student support facilities.
We reach beyond our campuses to improve the lives of those who never enter our classrooms or laboratories as academics or students. Our award winning researchers are leaders in addressing issues that impact everyone, from public health to environmental sustainability. We contribute to Australia’s community life through championship winning sports teams and leading art and music performances.
In creating the first tertiary education institution in Australia, our founders recognised the power of education to change society. That belief remains just as strong today.
OUR STRATEGIC PLAN The University of Sydney is a large and diverse institution, but one that has a strong shared identity and commitment to the power of ideas to transform our world. We provide our staff and students with the freedom to explore different ideas so that they can make a difference in whatever sphere they choose.
In August 2010, we launched a new strategic plan for the five years to 2015 that has at its heart our commitment to attracting and welcoming the brightest researchers and the most promising students, whatever their social or cultural background.

OUR RESEARCH Sydney researchers pursue cutting-edge research, reaching across disciplinary barriers to find unique solutions to improve and transform our lives.
Latest available figures confirm the University of Sydney as Australia’s leading research university, generating a total of $353.5 million research income. In 2009, the Australian Research Council awarded ground-breaking Sydney researchers 50 fellowships, the highest number among Australian universities.
OUR TEACHING AND LEARNING Studying alongside top researchers, and in some cases contributing to their research, exposes Sydney students to excellence – and challenges them to succeed as leaders in whatever career field they choose.
We offer a comprehensive range of high-quality undergraduate degrees, as well as postgraduate coursework and research programs. We aim to attract the most promising students, regardless of their background, and ensure they are challenged to absorb and transform knowledge into their own unique insights and breakthroughs.
Our students are intimately involved in University life, from social clubs to having a strong voice in University decisionmaking; this involvement sets us apart from our Australian peers, generating a unique on-campus buzz.
