The Allen E. Paulson College of Science and Technology invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair in the Department of Chemistry. Georgia Southern University, an institution of the University System of Georgia, and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is the largest and most comprehensive center of higher education in the southern half of Georgia. A residential university serving 16,841 students in fall 2007, Georgia Southern's hallmark is a superior educational experience emphasizing academic distinction, excellent teaching, and student success. Founded in 1906, the University offers 118 degree programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels through eight colleges. The 675-acre campus is located in Statesboro, a Main Street community of approximately 30,000 residents, 50 miles northwest of historic Savannah, and 200 miles southeast of Atlanta.
Within this setting, the Department of Chemistry offers curricular programs approved by the American Chemical Society, and is comprised of 17 tenured and tenure-track faculty committed to undergraduate education that includes a commitment to undergraduate research. In 2007 the Department ranked 13th in the nation for the number of ACS certified graduates it produces. The Department is rapidly increasing its externally funded research activities and is housed in a new 47,000 square foot chemistry building. The Department focuses on high quality, student-centered undergraduate education; preparing students for careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, education, and the chemical industry. Students are active in the ACS Student Affiliate chapter, which has been recognized as Outstanding or Commendable Chapter of the ACS in each of the past 7 years. Over 75% of chemistry majors engage in undergraduate research, furthering their preparedness for post-baccalaureate studies in many fields. Position Description. Reporting to the Dean of the College, the Chair of Chemistry will provide leadership for the teaching, scholarship, and service missions of the Department, administer the Department's financial and human resources, and complete other tasks as assigned by the Dean. The position is primarily responsible for: advancing a culture of academic excellence where distinction in teaching, research, scholarship and other creative works and service is expected and rewarded; and providing leadership for curriculum development and assessment of student learning. The candidate will also be expected to communicate a vision for the department that will lead to a new level of accomplishment and national recognition. The position is a 12-month appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
