The Department of Curriculum, Foundations, and Reading in the College of Education invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Reading Education. Georgia Southern University, an institution of the University System of Georgia, and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is the largest and most comprehensive center of higher education in the southern half of Georgia. A residential university serving 16,841 students in fall 2007, Georgia Southern's hallmark is a superior educational experience emphasizing academic distinction, excellent teaching, and student success. Founded in 1906, the University offers 118 degree programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels through eight colleges. The 675-acre campus is located in Statesboro, a Main Street community of approximately 30,000 residents, 50 miles northwest of historic Savannah, and 200 miles southeast of Atlanta.
Within this setting, the Department of Curriculum, Foundations, and Reading, one of three departments within the College of Education, includes 22 faculty members in five areas: educational foundations, educational psychology, curriculum theory and development, reading education, and educational research. The Department offers undergraduate and graduate level courses and programs, including a master's degree program in reading education and a doctoral degree program in curriculum studies.
The Assistant Professor of Reading Education position supports the mission of the program, department, and college. The College of Education has adopted "Reflective Educators for Diverse Learners" as the theme for its conceptual framework and frames its professional work on commitment to the following: knowledge and dispositions of the profession, diversity, technology, and practice of continuous reflection and assessment. These elements are reflected in the course syllabi that ground the Reading program.
Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Curriculum, Foundations, and Reading, the Assistant Professor of Reading Education will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in literacy, language arts and reading, and graduate courses in the reading endorsement, specialist, M.Ed., and Ed.D. programs; advising graduate students; producing scholarship within the discipline; and providing service to the University and profession. The position is a 9-month appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
