The Psychology Department in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences invites nominations and applications for the position of Associate Professor or Professor. Georgia Southern University, an institution of the University System of Georgia, and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is the largest and most comprehensive center of higher education in the southern half of Georgia. A residential university serving 16,841 students in fall 2007, Georgia Southern's hallmark is a superior educational experience emphasizing academic distinction, excellent teaching, and student success. Founded in 1906, the University offers 118 degree programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels through eight colleges. The 675-acre campus is located in Statesboro, a Main Street community of approximately 30,000 residents, 50 miles northwest of historic Savannah, and 200 miles southeast of Atlanta.

 

Within this setting, the Psychology Department offers Bachelors, Master's (experimental emphasis), and Doctor of Psychology (clinical psychology) degree programs.  The Department is committed to the ideals and goals set forth in the university's regional mission.  The individual in this position will play a role in all degree programs, but will focus primarily in the Doctor of Psychology program.

 

Position Description. Reporting to the Department Chair, the individual in this position will have the potential to lead the department's new Psy.D. program in clinical psychology as Director of Clinical Training (DCT).  The program admitted its first cohort of students in Fall, 2007 and is working towards accreditation by the American Psychological Association. The Psy.D. program is committed to training generalist psychologists to do practice and assessment in underserved, rural settings and/or with rural clientele. Candidates who have an interest and demonstrated experience in this area are encouraged to apply. In addition to serving as the DCT, teaching responsibilities include a subset of the following:  clinically-related undergraduate courses (e.g., abnormal, substance abuse), and clinical doctoral courses (e.g., Psychotherapy Foundations, Clinical Skills, Practicum Supervision, etc). The position also includes doing research in the individual's area of expertise. The position is a 9-month appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical or counseling psychology by August 1, 2009.
  • Licensed or license-eligible at the doctoral level in GA.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive work environment in the department, college, and University.
  • Minimum of 4 years college/university teaching experience at the assistant professor level is required for the rank of associate professor along with a strong record of research and service with publications and presentations in professional venues.
  • Minimum of 5 years college/university teaching experience at the associate professor level is required for the rank of professor along with a strong record of research and service with substantial publications and presentations in professional venues.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Licensed at the doctoral level in GA for at least one year.

         One year full-time college or university teaching experience.[GSU2] 

  • Integrative, theoretical orientation
  • Managerial, supervisory, and administrative experience
  • Interest in community psychology and/or rural mental health
