The Department of Leadership, Technology, and Human Development in the College of Education invites nominations and applications for a position at the rank of assistant or associate professor of Counselor Education. Georgia Southern University, an institution of the University System of Georgia, and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is the largest and most comprehensive center of higher education in the southern half of Georgia. A residential university serving 16,841 students in fall 2007, Georgia Southern's hallmark is a superior educational experience emphasizing academic distinction, excellent teaching, and student success. Founded in 1906, the University offers 118 degree programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels through eight colleges. The 675-acre campus is located in Statesboro, a Main Street community of approximately 30,000 residents, 50 miles northwest of historic Savannah, and 200 miles southeast of Atlanta.

 

Within this setting, the Department of Leadership, Technology, and Human Development (http://coe.georgiasouthern.edu/lthd/), one of three departments within the College of Education (http://coe.georgiasouthern.edu/), includes twenty-four faculty in four distinct programs. The program in Counselor Education offers graduate degrees at the master's and educational specialist levels with concentrations in school, community, and higher education student services.

 

Position Description. Reporting to the department chair, the assistant/associate professor position's responsibilities include teaching courses in Counselor Education, advising students, conducting scholarly research and publishing, and providing service to the University, community, and profession. The position is a 9-month appointment with possible summer employment opportunities, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in Counselor Education or related field by August 1, 2009
  • The ability to teach graduate courses on-campus and off-campus and offer graduate advisement
  • The ability to conduct scholarly research and publish and perform service
  • Demonstrated commitment to cross-cultural curricula
  • The ability to work with diverse student populations
  • The ability to use and model technology
  • Effective communication skills
  • Minimum of 4 years college/university teaching experience at the assistant professor level is required for the rank of associate professor along with a strong record of research and service with publications and presentations in professional venues.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in community mental health counseling
  • Graduate of a CACREP accredited program in counseling
  • Experience in higher education
  • Experience teaching via distance education
  • Licensure or licensure eligibility as a Licensed Professional Counselor
  • Certification or experience in addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling
  • Successful external grant writing
  • Experience teaching using distance education technology
