Job Title: Mechanical Engineer or Enviornmental Post Doc Fellow
Description:

Be Part of Something Great!

The mission of Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division is to perform analysis, research and development leading to better energy technologies and reduction of adverse energy-related environmental impacts. Our work increases the efficiency of energy use, reduces its environmental effects, provides the nation with environmental benefits, and helps developing nations achieve similar goals through technical advice.

The Indoor Environment Department of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory invites applicants for a Mechanical or Environmental Engineer Post Doc. Under direction from a scientist, you will apply environmental statistics to analyze data, run computer models to predict energy use, and airflow and pollutant transport in buildings.

In collaboration with other team members, you will :

  • Develop models of energy use, and airflow and pollutant transport processes in buildings.
  • Carry out applied statistics to analyze experimental monitoring data, characterize uncertainty in model predictions, and develop strategies for energy optimization.
  • Develop techniques to interpret data from energy and air monitoring sensors in buildings, and to compare data to computer models.
  • Contribute to scientific discussions regarding existing and new problems relevant to the research group.
  • Develop your research interests, and to build collaborations with other scientists at the Laboratory.
  • Conduct research, prepare reports, present results at meetings, and write articles for publication in scientific refereed journals.
The ideal candidate will have :
  • A recent Ph.D. in environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, statistics, applied physics, or related field is required.
  • Experience in applied statistics and environmental modeling, and a working knowledge of computer programming.
  • Familiarity with a scripting language (e.g., Perl) and UNIX computing is desirable. Familiarity with Bayesian statistics is highly desirable.

Employer:

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has been a leader in science and engineering research for more than 70 years. Located on a 200 acre site in the hills above the University of California's Berkeley campus, adjacent to the San Francisco Bay, Berkeley Lab holds the distinction of being the oldest of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Laboratories. The Lab is managed by the University of California, operating with an annual budget of more than $500 million (FY2004) and a staff of about 3,800 employees, including more than 500 students.

Berkeley Lab conducts unclassified research across a wide range of scientific disciplines with key efforts in fundamental studies of the universe; quantitative biology; nanoscience; new energy systems and environmental solutions; and the use of integrated computing as a tool for discovery. It is organized into 17 scientific divisions and hosts four DOE national user facilities.
