Job Title: PhD Student
Description:

The group of Dr. Alyson MacInnes is currently using basic model organisms to study mutations in genes that are linked to human disease. Specifically, the group is using zebrafish (and human cell lines) to study genes required for protein translation that when mutated result in disease, including malignancies. A position is available in this group for a:

PhD Student (m/f)
full time (38 hours/week)

Description of the project: this project will investigate defects in the translation machinery of basic model organisms that lead to aberrant cell proliferation and cancer. It has been previously established that mutations in ribosomal proteins and ribosomal RNA processing proteins are linked to malignancies in both zebrafish and in humans. The project aims to establish the molecular mechanisms by which these mutations result in cancer.

Requirements: an MSc degree and working experience in an internationally accredited research group is necessary. Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques such as PCR, cloning, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, mammalian cell culture, Northern and Western blotting is required. Previous experience with zebrafish and with related techniques such as microinjections and photomicroscopy of live embryos is highly desirable. An understanding of proteomics will be helpful. Fluency in English is essential.

To apply: Please send your application with your curriculum vitae, a copy of your academic records and description of research experience to the HR department: Ms. S. Yamini, Hubrecht Institute, Uppsalalaan 8, 3584 CT Utrecht, stating in the upper left corner vacancy HI-2008-16. Or send an email to s.yamini@niob.knaw.nl.
