Description:  A postdoctoral research position is available immediately for a highly motivated individual with an interest in design and manufacturing for sustainability. The position is within the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics at Michigan Technological University. Michigan Tech is located in Houghton, MI in the heart of Michigan's scenic Keweenaw Peninsula. In addition to preparation of proposals and publications, mentoring to graduate students, and assistance with all activities in Dr. Sutherland's research program, the successful candidate will be engaged in multidisciplinary research with graduate scholars and other personnel in the Sustainable Futures Institute (www.sfi.mtu.edu).

Research areas

  • Life-cycle assessment
  • Green manufacturing processes and systems
  • Product and process design for sustainability
  • Air quality issues related to micro- and nano-manufacturing
  • Energy logistics including those that support cellulose to ethanol conversion
  • Material flow and economic exchange modeling to assess environmental and economic effects
  • Product end-of-use, takeback/reverse logistics, disassembly, and remanufacturing
  • Servicizing of products as a strategy to promote dematerialization
  • Characterizing the social dimension of sustainability

Qualifications:  The successful candidate will be knowledgeable of sustainability principles, have excellent communication skills, and have authored publications related to design and manufacturing for sustainability. The applicant should possess a Ph.D.in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

Compensation:  Salary based upon qualifications and experience. Benefit package is included.
