Description:

Research Scientist / Research Fellow / Postdoctoral Associate Positions

Integrated Modeling of Singapore's Environment (iMOSE) - Ocean Modeling and Data Assimilation

Research positions are now available in CENSAM's iMOSE project, Ocean Modeling and Data Assimilation, which will focus on multi-scale measurements and modeling of the fluid environment and its interaction with the land and atmosphere. These positions will be based at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) Centre in Singapore, with visits to the MIT.

The overall goal of the project is to establish the FVCOM (Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model) at various scales. The largest one is the South-China Sea domain that includes the South China Sea itself, the Malacca and the Singapore Straits. This domain will require coupling with global ocean and weather prediction models to account for large scale driving forces as well as to resolve the Pacific-Indian and Indonesian through-flows. A smaller regional domain will be nested in the large domain to cover the Singapore Strait alone. This intermediate domain and grid will also be used for coupling and nesting between regional scale driving forces and local scale phenomena. The smaller local domain, embedded in the regional one, is needed for coupling with sediment transport models and the optimal design of trajectories of moving underwater vehicles (AUV). At the local scale, data assimilation modules already adapted to FVCOM will be used to assimilate the locally available data and improve the forecasting of the local circulation. The ultimate goal at the local scale is the real-time prediction of the circulation in assimilation mode.

Applicants are expected to have doctoral degrees in atmospheric or oceanic sciences, mathematics, physics or related fields. Applicants should have strong skills in mathematics and especially complex numerical computation. Ability to work independently but within a team-based research environment is needed.

Applications should include a cover letter and a full CV/resume, together with names and contact information for three references. Please submit applications via email to censam@mit.edu.
