Postdoctoral training positions are currently available in the Membrane Signaling Group of the Laboratory of Neurobiology at NIEHS in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina to study regulation of ion channel proteins by signal transduction pathways, including G proteins, calcium, phosphoinositides, and reversible protein phosphorylation. These mechanisms underlie physiological homeostasis, so when they are disrupted by human genetic variation or by environmental toxicants, human susceptibility to disease increases (Gentile et al., 2008 PNAS 105:14704; Erxleben et al., 2006 PNAS 103:3932). Pursuing these projects will offer the trainee the opportunity to learn patch clamp electrophysiology, confocal fluorescence microscopy, and the molecular biology of signal transduction, but applicants should already be experienced in at least one of these areas.

Applications will be considered from any electrophysiologist or molecular biologist who has published studies of signaling mechanisms and/or ion channels and who will complete her/his graduate training in the next six months or who has received a Ph.D. or M.D. within the past five years. Appointments are initially for 2 years with the possibility of annual renewal for 3 additional years. Salary is on the NIH scale.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, is one of 27 research institutes and centers that comprise the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
