**** This is a multi-level posting *** The Engineer will Develop and demonstrate solutions to a variety of moderately large and/or complex problems related to systems technologies, including modeling and simulation, through the general use and application of design/development practices, theories, and techniques. Typical R&D areas of interest may include, but not necessarily be limited to, sensor networks/systems, dynamic surveillance and detection, instrumentation and control, control system security, Reactor/Balance-Of-Plant (BOP) integration issues, decision systems, and online conditioning monitoring and anomaly detection and interpretation techniques with diagnostic/prognostic capabilities. Additional R&D activities may involve the development of process and operations models, data acquisition and supervisory systems, and embedded sensory networks and interfaces. Main application areas are national security and nuclear energy systems, including nuclear energy-based space exploration systems. Participate and provide leadership in the development and testing of engineered solutions using current and emerging systems technologies. Apply extensive expertise in systems principles, theories, and concepts. Work with customers to develop requirements, produce, and test designs, and provide necessary documentation. Develop solutions to moderately complex problems that require ingenuity, innovation, and creativity. Plan, conduct, and possibly supervise technical assignments. Exercise considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments. Review progress and evaluate results. Develop/recommend changes in project plans. Capable of working with only general direction, with appropriate review of work for adequacy and accuracy.
The Engineer will conduct applied research projects in systems technologies, including sensor, instrumentation, control, and decision systems. Review project progress and evaluate results. Write technical manuscripts reporting methods and results of projects. Provide innovative, creative, and practical solutions to moderately complex problems. Provide proactive ideas in solving complex issues. Design, develop and test innovative computer-aided systems and application programs to meet requirements specified by a wide variety of customers and ensure that safety requirements are met. Assist in planning projects and determining objectives. Negotiate work scope, schedule, and project costs. Provide consultation services to customers in the areas of requirement definitions, software operation, and training. Conduct review of requirements, designs, code, documentation, and testing. Enhance technical currency and proficiency through peer participation, continuing education, and technical publication. Maintain required training.
R&D Scientist Engineer Level 2: Candidate must have an earned Ph.D. in electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a closely related field.
R&D Scientist Engineer Level 3: Candidate must have an earned Ph.D. in electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a closely related field, and possess 3 years of directly relevant experience.
Other required qualifications: a demonstrated research potential; and a commitment to the development and completion of sponsored applied research programs.
