CAMPUS: Purdue University North Central is a regional campus within the Purdue University system. It currently serves approximately 4241 students with a full-time faculty of 122. This scenic campus is situated on 268 rolling and wooded acres eight miles south of Lake Michigan near the cities of LaPorte, Michigan City, and Valparaiso. It is 65 miles east of Chicago's vast cultural resources and 85 miles north of Purdue's main campus in West Lafayette, IN. The location offers both urban and suburban living, excellent school systems, and extensive recreational facilities.

MISSION: The Mathematics, Statistics and Physics Department supports the campus mission in the following ways: we are dedicated to helping students understand, apply, and appreciate Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics; we are committed to student learning by providing and assessing courses necessary for degrees on our campus and courses that transfer to Purdue West Lafayette and other institutions; and we encourage our faculty to pursue scholarly inquiry, discovery activities, and involvement in community engagement.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Ten-month, full-time, tenure-track faculty position with possible summer appointments and an excellent benefits package. The department currently offers the first two years of an undergraduate physics program, and provides service courses in Physics, Introductory Astronomy, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and Mathematics to support campus degree and certificate programs, including a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering. Degrees in other engineering disciplines are currently under consideration. In addition, starting fall 2009, the department will offer upper level physics and mathematics courses as part of a new B.S. degree in Secondary Mathematics Education, with tracks in Physics and Physical Science likely to follow in 2-3 years. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Earned Ph.D. in Physics or Applied Physics with a strong commitment to excellence and innovation in teaching is required. Documented teaching success in physics at the college level is highly desirable. Previous experience in teaching Introductory Astronomy is a plus. Willingness to use technology to enhance teaching/learning is expected. Preference will be given to candidates who can involve students in research.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Primarily teaching college level physics courses. Duties may include teaching introductory mathematics and astronomy, developing and teaching blended or distance learning courses, and academic advising. Teaching load is 11-14 contact hours per week per semester (3-4 courses per semester). Some teaching may be in the evenings or at off-campus locations including two correctional facilities. Research and scholarly activities appropriate to a primarily teaching institution are expected and supported.
