Job Title: Chemist Postdoctoral Fellow
Description:

Be Part of Shaping the Future!

The Adavanced Energy Department has an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Chemist in the field of polymer chemistry to design, synthesize, and characterize new polymer materials primarily for use in fuel cells. (For additional information about this Department, go to http://eetd.lbl.gov/r-aet.html.)

As a Chemist Post Doc Fellow, you will:

  • Design, synthesize and characterize new polymer materials primarily for use in fuel cells.
  • Apply these materials to light-weight batteries, Polymer LED devices, biosensors, and electrochemical reactors.
  • Conduct electrochemical characterization of polymers, as well as chemical, mechanical and morphological characterization.
  • Prepare reports and make presentations at internal and scientific meetings.

Qualifications

  • A recent (within the last 4 years) Ph.D. in polymer chemistry with a strong emphasis on polymer or organic chemistry.
  • A background/experience in organic/polymer synthesis, including operation of FT-IR, high-field NMR, UV-VIS, chromatography (GC, GC/MS, HPLC, GPC, CE), mass spectroscopy, chemical, and thermal/rheological characterization of polymers (DSC/TGA/DMA).
  • Experience in microscopy techniques such as AFM, SEM and TEM, as well as familiarity with air-sensitive materials and use of a glove box, Schlenk-line and vacuum deposition equipment.
  • Experience with electrochemistry inculding fuel cell systems.
  • Very good oral and written communication skills.

Employer:

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has been a leader in science and engineering research for more than 70 years. Located on a 200 acre site in the hills above the University of California's Berkeley campus, adjacent to the San Francisco Bay, Berkeley Lab holds the distinction of being the oldest of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Laboratories. The Lab is managed by the University of California, operating with an annual budget of more than $500 million (FY2004) and a staff of about 3,800 employees, including more than 500 students.

Berkeley Lab conducts unclassified research across a wide range of scientific disciplines with key efforts in fundamental studies of the universe; quantitative biology; nanoscience; new energy systems and environmental solutions; and the use of integrated computing as a tool for discovery. It is organized into 17 scientific divisions and hosts four DOE national user facilities.
