Funded by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), we conduct a central research project on the impact of urbanisation on the allergenicity of birch pollen grains. Under natural exposure conditions, birch pollen will be analysed with respect to their allergenicity. Within an interdisciplinary research team this study will evaluate the effect of natural (e.g. soil, climate, genetic background) and anthropogenic (e.g. traffic pollutants) factors on birch pollen in a holistic approach including analysis of allergen bioavailability, release of pollen associated lipid mediators from birch pollen grains, in vitro immunostimulatory activity and in vivo allergenic potential. The position is available from 01.01.2009, for up to two years with the possibility of extension. Primary responsibilities: Analysis of protein, allergen and PALM (pollen associated lipid mediators) content in pollen grains from rural and urban site, in vitro stimulation of neutrophils and dendritic cells with pollen (aqueous pollen extracts) from different sites. Qualifications: Degree (B.Sc, M.Sc. Dipl. Biol.) in (molecular) biology or related fields. Candidates should be strongly motivated, team-oriented and have excellent communication skills.
