Job Title: Computational Biologist Post Doc
Description:

Be part of something great!

Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) you will primarily focus on the development of computational tools for analyses of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data. The availability of user friendly, robust software analysis tools for SAXS data is of growing importance as the biological community is increasingly using SAXS as a standard method to analyze complex biological systems. The incumbent will assist with the development of a new set of tools, including a software library, for SAXS data analysis.

As a Computational Biologist Postdoc you will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop of new software for the analyses of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data.
  • Assist in the development of a new set of tools, including a software library for SAXS data analysis.
  • Document and test the developed software
  • Actively participate in group meetings.
  • Present results at group meetings and scientific conferences.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication.
  • Collaborate with internal and external SAXS users in data analyses.

Key Success Factors:

  • Recent Ph.D. in (Computational) Biology or Chemistry, Computer Science, Software Development, Physics, Applied Mathematics or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience data analysis techniques.
  • Basic understanding of statistical and numerical techniques, algorithms, optimization and data structure.
  • Familiarity with software development tools such as C++, C or Fortran programming languages and scripting languages such as Python or Perl.
  • Strong programming skills.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment are critical.
  • Experience with open-source CCTBX framework for computational crystallography and boost-python is highly preferred

Employer:

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has been a leader in science and engineering research for more than 70 years. Located on a 200 acre site in the hills above the University of California's Berkeley campus, adjacent to the San Francisco Bay, Berkeley Lab holds the distinction of being the oldest of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Laboratories. The Lab is managed by the University of California, operating with an annual budget of more than $500 million (FY2004) and a staff of about 3,800 employees, including more than 500 students.

Berkeley Lab conducts unclassified research across a wide range of scientific disciplines with key efforts in fundamental studies of the universe; quantitative biology; nanoscience; new energy systems and environmental solutions; and the use of integrated computing as a tool for discovery. It is organized into 17 scientific divisions and hosts four DOE national user facilities.
