Job Title: Molecular Genetics of Vascular Biology, Dr. Elizabeth Nabel
Description:

Molecular Genetics of Vascular Biology
National Human Genome Research Institute
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
National Institutes of Health
Department of Health and Human Services

A postdoctoral training position is available in the Genome Technology Branch of the National Human Genome Research Institute. The position is located in the laboratory of Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D., whose research includes work on the molecular genetics of vascular biology. Current studies in the lab focus on understanding the molecular pathophysiology of vascular remodeling in a premature aging syndrome, Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome. This rare genetic disorder, due to a de novo mutation in exon the lamin A (LMNA) gene, leads to production of the farnestylated mutant lamin A protein, progerin, which disrupts nuclear structure. Blood vessels are characterized by vascular smooth muscle cell drop-out, and death occurs at a mean age of 13 from heart attack or stroke. Current studies are characterizing vascular progenitor cells, cell cycle regulation, and TGF-β signaling pathways. Candidates should have an M.D. or Ph.D. degree and research experience in molecular and cellular biology, human genetics, and/or vascular biology. Expertise in molecular and cell biology, genomics, and animal models is desirable, and skills in gene expression, proteomics, and/or gene transfer are also highly appropriate.

The intramural research program is on the Bethesda campus and offers a wide array of training opportunities for scientists early in their careers. The funding for this position is stable and offers the trainee wide latitude in the design and pursuit of their research question. Access to extensive core facilities including a transgenic mouse core facility, human clinical-translational research at the NIH clinical center, as well as others, allows a postdoc to accomplish a great deal in a short time. The Washington D.C. area provides innumerable opportunities for cultural enrichment as well.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) provides leadership for a national program in diseases of the heart, blood vessels, lung, and blood; blood resources; and sleep disorders. Since October 1997, the NHLBI has also had administrative responsibility for the NIH Woman's Health Initiative.

The Institute plans, conducts, fosters, and supports an integrated and coordinated program of basic research, clinical investigations and trials, observational studies, and demonstration and education projects. Research is related to the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart, blood vessel, lung, and blood diseases; and sleep disorders. The NHLBI plans and directs research in development and evaluation of interventions and devices related to prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients suffering from such diseases and disorders. It also supports research on clinical use of blood and all aspects of the management of blood resources. Research is conducted in the Institute's own laboratories and by scientific institutions and individuals supported by research grants and contracts.

For health professionals and the public, the NHLBI conducts educational activities, including development and dissemination of materials in the above areas, with an emphasis on prevention.

The NHLBI supports research training and career development of new and established researchers in fundamental sciences and clinical disciplines to enable them to conduct basic and clinical research related to heart, blood vessel, lung, and blood diseases; sleep disorders; and blood resources through individual and institutional research training awards and career development awards.

The Institute coordinates relevant activities in the above areas, including the related causes of stroke, with other research institutes and federal health programs. Relationships are maintained with institutions and professional associations, and with international, national, state, and local officials as well as voluntary agencies and organizations working in the above areas.
