POSITION: Scientist / Biochemical Engineer - Fermentation Process Development
Our client is a renewable oil production firm. We are the leader in algal biotechnology, harnessing the power of microalgae to renewably produce clean and scalable fuels, chemicals, and food oils and health and wellness materials.
We are searching for a Scientist / Biochemical Engineer to join our Fermentation Process Development team. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in fermentation process development and play a key role in the development and implementation of the company’s renewable energy technology. The successful candidate will be an essential part of our fermentation staff, and will interface with the strain development and metabolic engineering groups.
DESCRIPTION:
Our client seeks a Scientist /BioChemical Engineer to develop scaleable and economical fermentation processes for microalgae. The position will involve development and implementation of fermentation processes to produce kilogram to multi-ton quantities of biomass. Establishment and refinement of fermentation processes at lab, pilot and production scale is the main focus of the position. Experience with continuous culture at laboratory and manufacturing scale is a desirable. The successful candidate will work on multiple multi-disciplinary project teams. Very strong leadership, organizational and communication skills (written and oral) are essential. A solid knowledge of the issues around laboratory scale through commercial scale microbial fermentation is essential. Previous experience with algae and downstream biomass processing is desirable but not necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Working with Process Development and R&D teams to identify, develop, optimize and commercialize critical oil fermentation processes.
- Interaction with outside partners / third-party service providers / contractors to conduct fermentation process development experiments and trials at laboratory or pilot scale.
- Identifying critical process equipment and systems needed for technology scale-up and full production.
- Working with an engineering team to design and build processing systems to produce commercial scale volumes at competitive costs. This would include design, cost estimation, build, and startup of pilot and demonstration plants, as well as full scale commercial processing facilities.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Very strong working knowledge of microbial fermentation processes, including continuous culture, and related processing equipment and systems.
- 6+ years of successful experience in media optimization, process development, and scaleup from bench to commercial scale for microbial fermentation processes.
- Multi-year experience with BioEngineering issues in fermentation equipment and plant design and operation such as mixing, mass transfer, heat transfer, aseptic design, sterilization, etc.
- Familiarity with pilot plant & demonstration plant design, build, and start-up.
- Ph.D. degree in BioChemical Engineering or equivalent. Alternatively, B.S. or M.S. degree with significant additional experience.
- Team player that thrives in a cutting edge, fast paced, entrepreneurial environment.

The successful applicant for this position will have the ability, desire, and motivation to integrate their skill set into a dynamic technology program that includes pioneering metabolic engineering of microalgae, pilot scale and large scale microalgal cultivation and product extraction, chemical transformation of biofuel and biofuel feedstocks, and delivery of biofuel material to commercial partners.
