POSITION: Scientist Microbiology
Our client is a renewable oil production firm. We are the leader in algal biotechnology, harnessing the power of microalgae to renewably produce clean and scalable fuels, chemicals, and food oils and health and wellness materials.
 
The company is located in the heart of the biotechnology corridor in South San Francisco California.

This individual will play an integral role in our client's strain development efforts and assist in the creation of novel microalgae strains through the use of molecular biology and metabolic engineering. Further, this scientist will carry out exploratory studies on strains, as well as media and production protocol development.

DUTIES:

  • Strain culturing, media development, molecular biology, data analysis, and record keeping.
  • Apply qualitative and quantitative methodologies to generate data and conduct analysis through applied microbiology/molecular biology.
  • Follow routine protocols, and maintain knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices and procedures.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • PhD degree in Microbiology, Molecular biology or related science plus 2-3 years of postdoctoral or industrial experience.
  • Proficiency in microbiological techniques and good laboratory practices.
  • Experience with common molecular biology techniques, strain construction, and gene knockouts.
  • Culturing, media development, and genetic manipulations in microalgae or other non standard organisms.
  • Excellent time management capabilities, including the ability to prioritize diverse tasks within the overall context of a fast-moving project.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with the ability to present clear and concise data from experimental results.
  • Well-honed analytical skills and computer proficiency.
  • Ability to lead a team and to coordinate effectively with commercialization teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-motivate, function independently and multi-task with minimal direction.
  • Ability to train and guide Research Associates.
Our client is in a rapid growth phase and is seeking to add productive-driven key members to its R&D team within the biofuel area.

The ideal candidate will have the ability and motivation to integrate their skill set into a dynamic R&D program that includes pioneering metabolic engineering of microalgae, pilot scale and large scale microalgal cultivation and hydrocarbon extraction, chemical transformation of biofuel and biofuel feedstocks, and delivery of biofuel material to commercial partners.
