Job Title: Cell Cycle Regulation in Drosophila, Dr. Mary Lilly
Description:

Cell Cycle Regulation in Development

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
Cell Biology and Metabolism Program

A fully funded postdoctoral position is currently available to study cell cycle regulation during Drosophila oogenesis. Current projects include using genetic and molecular approaches to identify the pathways that control meiotic entry and the maintenance of the prophase I meiotic arrest of the oocyte. Chromosome mis-segregation during female meiosis is the leading cause of miscarriages and birth defects in humans. Recent evidence suggests that these meiotic errors may be downstream of defects in oocyte growth and/or the hormonal signaling pathways that drive oocyte differentiation. Drosophila oogenesis provides a genetically tractable system to examine how the cell cycle events of meiosis are coordinated with and influenced by the ongoing growth and differentiation of the oocyte.

The National Institutes of Health provides excellent training opportunities including access to genomic and proteomic core facilities and state of the art imagining. The Bethesda Campus is located in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, offering a culturally rich and diverse environment.

Candidates should have less than five years' postdoctoral experience and hold either a Ph.D. or M.D. equivalent. Positions are available for a minimum of 2 years and can be extended to 5 years for additional training. Salary is commensurate with experience. A strong background in molecular biology and genetics is required.

The NICHD was initially established to investigate the broad aspects of human development as a means of understanding developmental disabilities, including mental retardation, and the events that occur during pregnancy. Today, the Institute conducts and supports research on all stages of human development, from preconception to adulthood, to better understand the health of children, adults, families, and communities.
