Job Title: Biochemist Postdoctoral Fellow
Description:

Be Part of Something Great!

The Life Sciences Division has an opportunity for a Post Doc to participate as a member of the interdisciplinary Genemap-MS team. You will use mass spectrometry based metabolomics and bioinformatic technologies to understanding stress responses (chemotoxic agents, starvation, hypoxia, etc.) in various cell types and use this and proteomic information to experimentally validate gene annotations. Metabolomics is a rapidly expanding field which aims to characterize the global changes in small molecules to gain insights into living systems particularly those which are poorly characterized and have utility for biofuel production or understanding human health. Projects in the lab range from developing and applying new technologies (new surface ionization techniques) for imaging metabolites in tissues and assaying enzymatic activities, fluxomic analysis of mitochondria, and comprehensive approaches to characterizing the metabolomic states of cells.

Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator, you will:

  • Develop and apply some of our state-of-the-art approaches including: LC QTOF MS/MS metabolite profiling, NIMS and Nimzyme for high throughput applications and/or TOF-SIMS for metabolite imaging in microbial communities.
  • Design experiments (stresses, cell types, etc). Prepare cellular extracts. Perform LC/MS/MS profiling. Oversee proteomic analysis.
  • Analyze and integrate results using our bioinformatics tools include METLIN, XCMS. Help develop our new bioinformatics tools for HT metabolomic analysis and integration of metabolomics with other `Omics.
  • Participate with other members of the team in design experiments and update gene annotations to reflect the experimental results.
  • Publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at seminars and conferences.
  • Participate in development of grant proposals for new research directions and preparation of competing renewals of current research grants.
  • Collaborate with other members of the program project research team both internal and external to Berkeley Lab and develop new collaborations as appropriate to further the scientific goals of the Program.
Key Success Factors:
  • Recent Ph.D. in chemistry, biophysics, biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, or related field.
  • Hands-on research experience is required in one or more of the following fields: mass spectrometry (ideally LC/MS), cellular metabolism, and bioinformatics/computational biology.
  • Proven ability to perform independent research and organize data for publications and presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and plan the experiments.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with technical and scientific staff.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong publication record and experience working with and preparing biological samples for analysis (i.e. liquid extraction) is desired.

Notes:

This is a full-time, one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon performance and continuation of funding. This position will be open until filled.

Employer:

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has been a leader in science and engineering research for more than 70 years. Located on a 200 acre site in the hills above the University of California's Berkeley campus, adjacent to the San Francisco Bay, Berkeley Lab holds the distinction of being the oldest of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Laboratories. The Lab is managed by the University of California, operating with an annual budget of more than $500 million (FY2004) and a staff of about 3,800 employees, including more than 500 students.

Berkeley Lab conducts unclassified research across a wide range of scientific disciplines with key efforts in fundamental studies of the universe; quantitative biology; nanoscience; new energy systems and environmental solutions; and the use of integrated computing as a tool for discovery. It is organized into 17 scientific divisions and hosts four DOE national user facilities.
