Description: The Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, or Jefferson Lab (JLab), is a basic research laboratory built to probe the nucleus of the atom to learn more about the quark structure of matter. The lab is managed and operated for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science by Jefferson Science Associates, LLC (JSA). JSA is a Southeastern Universities Research Association/Computer Sciences Corporation limited liability corporation created specifically to manage and operate Jefferson Lab.

This position can be filled at SEII or SEIII level. It requires an experienced and versatile individual capable of fulfilling multiple functions. Specific assignments are flexible and will depend on how incumbent's strengths and experience complement existing expertise within the RadCon Deparment. The incumbent may assume leadership of the Radiological Health Group, overseeing operation of the analytical lab and the dosimetry program. or in the areas of radiological training, QA and procedure review. The incumbent also provides and coordinates support for other areas of radiation protection as needed and serves as a backup for other professionals in RadCon Department. Incumbent will be routinely engaged in radiologically challenging, time sensitive tasks with regulatory constraints.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Broad knowledge of Health Physics, expertise in at least one subfield (e.g. gamma spectroscopy and other analytical  methods, dosimetry, training, QA, shielding calculations).  Familiarity with radiation detection instrumentation and methods used to measure complex radiation fields .  Knowledge of methods used to characterize surface contamination and induced activity. Familiarity with methods and principles used in radiation safety systems. Knowledge of applicable DOE orders and other applicable regulation. Familiarity with small group leadership and personnel management principles. Familiarity with a broad range of software tools.  Desirable: familiarity with particle accelerator environment.


Minimum Qualifications: Baccalaureate degree in a scientific/engineering field plus at least five (SEII) or ten (SEIII) years of professional level experience in Health Physics or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in non-scientific discipline acceptable with NRRPT (for SEII) or ABHP (for SEIII) certification. Small group leadership experience is very desirable. Experience managing multiple projects and tasks is important. Experience at a high-energy accelerator laboratory, ABHP certification or advanced degree are a plus. SEIII only: Publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at conferences and/or other signs of recognition by the radiation protection community are expected at this level.



Salary: SEII: $65,300 - $103,100 , SEIII: $81,700 - $129,300
