Job Title: Civil/Structural Engineering Post Doc
Description:

Be Part of Something Great!

The Geophysics Department of the Earth Sciences Division has an opportunity for a Civil/Structural Engineering Post Doc to assist in the understanding of base-isolation technologies as applied to modifying the seismic response and to enhancing the performance of large, critical nuclear-reactor structures under earthquake loads.

As a Post Doc, you will:

  • Play a major role in the development of a NERG.CR report for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission on base isolation technology, design, and assessment as it pertains to nuclear power plants. This includes:
    - Collecting relevant information, assessing it, formulating a coherent understanding of it, and assisting in writing a report about it; and
    - Working on methods to perform the analysis necessary to support an understanding of how the performance of various base-isolation systems depends on the controllable parameters within the design of such a system.
  • Assist in developing an advanced framework for incorporating performance-based techniques into the design of nuclear power plants.
  • Aid in developing the scientific basis for enhanced-accuracy computer modeling of the response of base isolation systems.
  • Develop analysis methods to incorporate multi-dimensional loading and incoherent ground motion in soil-structure-interaction analyses.

Essential:

  • Demonstrated experience in understanding the basic civil/structural engineering concepts involved in understanding the seismic performance of base isolation systems for potential use in nuclear power plant design against seismic loads.
  • Research experience and/or design expertise in current rubber-based and friction-based isolation systems.
  • A Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a strong background in the above.
  • A demonstrated ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team and good writing skills.

Preferred:

  • An outstanding record of original and high-quality research focused on methods for understanding seismic performance of industrial structures, seismic design procedures for base isolated structures, or a closely related engineering area.
Notes:

This is a full-time, one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon performance and continuation of funding.

Employer:

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has been a leader in science and engineering research for more than 70 years. Located on a 200 acre site in the hills above the University of California's Berkeley campus, adjacent to the San Francisco Bay, Berkeley Lab holds the distinction of being the oldest of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Laboratories. The Lab is managed by the University of California, operating with an annual budget of more than $500 million (FY2004) and a staff of about 3,800 employees, including more than 500 students.

Berkeley Lab conducts unclassified research across a wide range of scientific disciplines with key efforts in fundamental studies of the universe; quantitative biology; nanoscience; new energy systems and environmental solutions; and the use of integrated computing as a tool for discovery. It is organized into 17 scientific divisions and hosts four DOE national user facilities.
