Job Title: Molecular and Genetic Epidemiology of Cancer, Dr. Jack Taylor
Description:

A postdoctoral fellowship position is available at NIH/NIEHS to investigate the role of human variation in DNA modification on cancer risk. Current work in the laboratory focuses on understanding the genetic determinants of human phenotypic variation in DNA methylation/epigenetics, telomere length, mitochondria copy number, and DNA repair, as well as determining the role of these phenotypic traits in cancer risk. These studies make use of large existing collections of samples from epidemiologic studies of breast, prostate, lung, and bladder cancers. The position is in the Molecular and Genetic Epidemiology Section within the Laboratory of Molecular Carcinogenesis and has close ties with the Epidemiology Branch.

We seek a creative, independent scientist with a strong background in molecular biology, molecular genetics, cell biology, or a related field who wishes to obtain interdisciplinary training in the rapidly expanding field of molecular epidemiology. The research environment is excellent and offers outstanding resources, equipment, supplies, core facilities, and opportunities for training and development. NIEHS has consistently ranked among the best places to work for postdoctoral fellows (see http://www.the-scientist.com/supplementary/flash/54374/top35.html).

Candidates should have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, or related field. Applicant must have less than 5 years of postdoctoral research experience. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply. NIH offers excellent salary and health care packages to its trainees.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, is one of 27 research institutes and centers that comprise the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The mission of the NIEHS is to reduce the burden of human illness and disability by understanding how the environment influences the development and progression of human disease.

The NIEHS traces its roots to 1966, when the U.S. Surgeon General announced the establishment of the Division of Environmental Health Sciences within the NIH. In 1969, the division was elevated to full NIH institute status. Since then, the NIEHS has evolved to its present status as a world leader in environmental health sciences, with an impressive record of important scientific accomplishments and a proud history of institutional achievements and growth under the leadership of former directors Paul Kotin, M.D. (1969–1971), David P. Rall, M.D., Ph.D. (1971–1990), and Kenneth Olden, Ph.D. (1991–2005).

Today, under the guidance of its 2006–2011 Strategic Plan, the NIEHS is expanding and accelerating its contributions to scientific knowledge of human health and the environment, and to the health and well-being of people everywhere.
