Job Title: PhD Student Droplet-Turbulence Dynamics Under Heterogeneous Conditions
Description:

Applied Sciences

The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,400 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

The focus of the Department of Multi-Scale Physics (http://www.msp.tudelft.nl/) is developing the conceptual understanding and enabling detailed control of fluid dynamics and transport phenomena at all relevant time and length scales as occurring in a wide variety of industrial and environmental processes. Our approach is typically ‘Applied Physics' and strongly technological. We aim at combining scientific rigour and industrial relevance in an internationally recognized centre of excellence where the participating individuals have the opportunity to contribute to the science behind the technology.

Job description

The dynamics of droplets in a turbulent field forms a challenging research topic with both industrial and environmental applications. Due to the swirling motion of the eddies, the droplets with their larger density will not be distributed uniformly. An important consequence is that droplet collisions are much more likely due to the preferential concentration. This is vital for the formation of rain drops, for example.

This PhD project focuses on the evolution of droplet size distributions. An experiment with a mixing layer will be set up. The droplet concentration and the background humidity on either side of the mixing layer will be controlled. The goal of the project is to understand the interplay between the turbulence dynamics, and the droplet and vapour distribution. This will be achieved through experiments in a so-called mixing layer. Advanced laser-based techniques (Laser Doppler Anemometry and Phase Doppler Anemometry) will be used. We are therefore looking for a skilled experimentalist, who is interested in difficult experiments with advanced equipment.

The PhD project is part of a larger national programme Droplets in Turbulence within the 3TU federation of the Netherlands. A strong cooperation with PhD students in this programme is foreseen.

Multiphase Flows form one of the research themes of the Department of Multi-Scale Physics. This PhD project has strong links to research in oil and gas transportation and the life cycle of clouds in the atmosphere.

Requirements

We are looking for enthusiastic (applied) physicists or chemical engineers with a solid background in fluid mechanics and transport phenomena and with an affinity for advanced experiments in multiphase flows. Team spirit is highly appreciated. Delft University of Technology is a bilingual organization; a good command of written and spoken English is essential.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be employed full-time by TU Delft for a fixed period of 4 years within which he or she is expected to write a dissertation leading to a doctoral degree (PhD thesis). The starting salary for a PhD is €2042 gross per month increasing to a maximum of € 2612 gross per month in the fourth year.

TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customized compensation and benefits package Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Delft University of Technology strives to increase the number of women in higher academic positions; women are therefore especially encouraged to apply.
