Job Title: Post-doc in Tabulated Chemistry Methods for Turbulent Combustion
Description:

Postdoc position

Flameless combustion is a technology leading to strongly reduced pollutant emissions and higher efficiency compared with traditional combustion processes. To widen the range of applicability of this technology, the impact of changes in fuel and oxidizer composition on the combustion process in a furnace operated using flameless combustion will be investigated by a team of two PhD students and two post-docs. The present post-doc will contribute to the efficient use of new advanced computational models in turbulent combustion software. In collaboration with NUMECA Int. and TNO Science and Industry, tools will be developed for the tabulation, for several fuels and oxidizers, of all relevant flame properties as a function of three or more independent variables. The tabulation program serving as the general framework uses structured grids, adaptive tabulation with a local refinement strategy based on quantitative criteria and using scaled coordinates, obtained by knowledge of the physically allowed range of the physical coordinates. Applications will be made to a lab scale single burner furnace and a multi-burner industrial furnace.

Requirements

For this post-doc position we are looking for an excellent researcher interested in computational fluid dynamics of turbulent gaseous flames. The candidate should have a PhD degree in Physics or Engineering and have a strong background in combustion or similar reacting flows. Preference is given to candidates with experience in computational software development.

Department

The focus of the Department of Multi-Scale Physics (http://www.msp.tudelft.nl/) is developing the conceptual understanding and enabling detailed control of fluid dynamics and transport phenomena at all relevant time and length scales as occurring in a wide variety of industrial and environmental processes. Our approach is typically ‘Applied Physics' and strongly technological. We aim at combining scientific rigour and industrial relevance in an internationally recognized centre of excellence where the participating individuals have the opportunity to contribute to the science behind the technology.
