Postdocs Applying Climate Expertise

 “Keeping pace with a changing climate”

The UCAR Visiting Scientist Programs (VSP) in collaboration with the NOAA Climate Program Office, announces the 2010 call for applications to the PACE (Postdocs Applying Climate Expertise) Fellowship Program. The program has been developed to:

  • Grow the pool of scientists qualified to work at the interface between climate science and its applications;
  • Transition advances in climate science and climate prediction into climate-related decision making tools and frameworks; and
  • Increase and strengthen collaborations between climate esearch institutions and decision making institutions across all sectors.

The program seeks recent or anticipated PhDs who have expertise in climate science and who are interested in applying their knowledge of the climate system to increase decision-making capacity in climate-sensitive sectors. See www.vsp.ucar.edu for more information.

First Round applications are due 1 January 2010. Application materials should include:

  • Cover letter that includes statement of interests and how interests relate to the PACE goals and objectives;
  • Curriculum vita and list of publications;
  • Description of PhD thesis research (and other research if applicable), including general area of expertise (e.g., regional modeling, drought dynamics, extreme event estimation, etc.) PhD and/or Master’s thesis and title and abstract; and
  • Names and contact information of at least three references. One must be from advisor. Applicant is responsible for ensuring that letters are sent to VSP electronically.

Applications may be submitted in electronic form (preferably *.pdf) via email attachments sent to vspapply@ucar.edu.

The UCAR selection committee will choose a short list of candidates from the pool of applicants by 22 January 2010. Short-listed candidates will be provided information on the 2010 hosting partner institutions and will be asked to write a short proposal to complete the application process. Proposals due to VSP on 1 March 2010.

Scientists awarded fellowships will become UCAR employees and will receive a fixed annual salary. UCAR benefits include health and dental insurance, paid time off, paid holidays, TIAA/CREF retirement fund, and life insurance. A relocation allowance and an allowance for travel during the appointment will be provided.
