Job Title: Mechanical Engineer Post Doc Fellow
Description:

Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory is providing solutions to scientific problems! Are you someone who can make a difference on our team?

The Environmental Energy Technologies Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Post Doctorate Fellow to add to their dynamic team in the Indoor Environment and Building Technologies Departments. The person filling this position will develop and evaluate technology concepts for saving energy and maintaining acceptable indoor environmental quality in commercial buildings. Two thirds time will be devoted to research on alternatives to conventional air conditioning in offices within moderate climates. Depending on the candidate's skills and interests, one third time will be devoted to either measurements of whole building energy performance or modeling of indoor airflows and pollutant transport. Under direction from scientists, the post doctoral fellow will be responsible for concept development, energy performance modeling, either energy performance monitoring or multi-zone air and pollutant transport modeling, arranging and managing meetings of stakeholders, and authorship of technical reports and papers.

With a high level of independence, the ideal candidate will:

  • Apply their basic knowledge in science and engineering and their strong. understanding of building science, including heating, ventilating, and air conditioning fundamentals, to develop concepts for integrated packages of building technologies and operating practices.
  • Capitalize on input from stakeholders and leading external researchers.
  • Model building energy performance using the EnergyPlus program.
  • Either perform measurements of whole-building energy performance or model of indoor airflows and pollutant transport.
  • Plan and manage meetings of stakeholders.
  • Serve as the lead author for technical reports and conference or journal papers.
Qualifications
  • Recent Ph.D. (in the past 2 years) in mechanical engineering, environmental engineering or a related field is required with substantial coursework in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics.
  • Strong understanding of commercial building energy and indoor environmental issues, with particular expertise in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning.
  • Substantial experience in building energy performance modeling using EnergyPlus or DOE-2.
  • Ability to perform research with only high level supervision.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, with an ability to serve as the lead author for technical papers.
  • Experience in building energy performance monitoring or in multi-zone modeling of indoor air and pollutant transport are a plus.
