Job Title: Computational Research Scientist- Plant Genomics
Description:

The Plant Genomics Program at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA has an exciting research opportunity available for an experienced Computational Scientist. Will be responsible for the development and application of innovative algorithms and computational approaches for the assembly and analysis of high-throughput genome sequencing datasets. Will lead a team of computer scientists and analysts within the JGI Plant Genome Program focused on large-scale genome sequence analysis and coordinate activities with other teams focused on the annotation, evolutionary analysis, and diversity analysis of plant and related genomes. Will distribute results to the scientific community by publication, scientific presentations, and over the web. Position reports to the JGI Plant Genome Program Lead.

Specific Job Duties

Essential -
- Develop and apply innovative computational algorithms for the assembly and analysis of large genome sequence datasets using conventional and next-generation sequencing technologies, generated at the JGI.
- Provide technical leadership to a group of Software Developers, Analysts and Postdocs completing computational projects for Plant Genomics.
- Interact with JGI Plant Genome Programs groups focused on genome annotation, evolutionary analysis, diversity analysis, and genome visualization.
- Communicate with the JGI Project Management and Information Technology teams, as well as other data analysts and sequence generators at the JGI.
- Collaborate with internal research groups to develop novel approaches to genome assembly, mapping, and other genome-scale problems using next-generation sequencing technologies.
- Independently solve complex systems and analysis problems.
- Maintain an accurate and detailed notebook describing analysis performed and ensure that results can be duplicated by others.

Marginal -
- Attend and present status reports and findings at seminars and group meetings; on and offsite.
- Summarize results and publish in peer review journals; contribute to scientific research papers and reports.
- Assist in acquiring external funding as needed.
- Provide training and guidance to other group members in area of expertise.

Key Success Factors

- Ph.D. in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, Computer Science or a closely related discipline and extensive experience in computational biology, genetics, molecular biology or related field.
- Demonstrated experience developing computational analysis tools.
- Demonstrated research accomplishments and extensive experience with large-scale sequencing analysis and proven capacity to apply innovative and applied work.
- Expertise in developing advanced computational algorithms and building and using computer tools and databases for bioinformatics research and visualization.
- Demonstrated experience with genome sequencing including: annotation and analysis, and experience working with large sequence datasets.
- Experience with parallel computing environments.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct and perform individual and collaborative research and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues with tact and diplomacy.
- Experience establishing effective collaborations and interacting with members of scientific, instrumentation and informatics communities.
- Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex analysis and systems issues and recommend solutions.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Proven record of publications demonstrating independent research.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills along with strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
