Job Title: Materials Postdoc Fellow (Energy Conserving/Generating Devices)
Description:

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) offers two exciting postdoctoral opportunities to help launch a new materials program for multifunctional window coatings for high performance buildings. The postdoctoral researchers will work together with an interdisciplinary team of materials scientists to develop materials for energy conserving and energy generating devices. These electronic materials will be processed by a combination of physical and chemical vapor deposition approaches, as well as by solution phase methods, based on colloidal nanocrystals synthesized at the Molecular Foundry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare novel electronic materials by plasma-assisted physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, and/or integration of solution-processed nanomaterials into thin film assemblies.
  • Perform materials characterization using techniques such as: x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), optical absorption spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and thermal analysis such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).
  • Perform electronic and optoelectronic characterization of devices and material properties.
  • Report results internally to collaborating researchers and externally through conference presentations and peer reviewed publications.

Qualifications:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or a related field with experience in either inorganic thin film processing or inorganic materials chemistry
  • Relevant materials experience may include sputter deposition of thin films, nanowire or nanotube synthesis, nanocrystal synthesis, sol-gel chemistry, or similar
  • Experience with electronic properties analysis as well as with some of the above described materials characterization techniques is strongly preferred.
  • Critical analysis and communication skills should be demonstrated through research publications in peer reviewed journals.

About us

The Molecular Foundry at Berkeley Lab, one of five Nanoscale Science Research Centers recently established by the U.S. Department of Energy, is a user facility for the design, synthesis and characterization of materials with nanometer dimensions. One of its charter pursuits is to conduct outstanding research across the breadth of nanoscience. Learn more at http://foundry.lbl.gov.

This new materials program is a multi-divisional effort lead by researchers in the Materials Sciences Division (MSD), within the Inorganic Nanostructures Facility at the Molecular Foundry, in collaboration with the Accelerator & Fusion Research Division (AFRD) and the Environmental Energy Technology Division (EETD).
