Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Epidemiology Branch at the NIH National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, studying the role of environmental factors in neurologic disease, particularly neurodegenerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis. Exposures of interest include heavy metals, pesticides, and solvents, as well as lifestyle factors and infectious agents. The role of genetic susceptibility and of pathophysiologic mechanisms including inflammation and oxidative stress are considered. We are particularly interested in exposures that affect disease progression.

NIEHS and the Epidemiology Branch have received national recognition for trainee programs. The Scientist consistently lists NIEHS among the top places for postdoctoral training. EB investigators are leaders in the scientific community, with past Presidents of the American College of Epidemiology, American Epidemiological Society, Society for Epidemiologic Research, and Society for Pediatric Epidemiologic Research; as well as Editors of the American Journal of Epidemiology, Epidemiology, and Pediatric Epidemiology. This stimulating environment presents excellent opportunities for young scientists developing their research careers. Fellows participate in interdisciplinary and/or multicenter collaborations and career development activities. Previous trainees have positions with schools of public health and medicine, NIH, CDC, and industry.

Applicants must have a doctoral degree (or be near completion) in epidemiology or a related field, or an M.D. plus epidemiology experience or training (e.g., M.P.H.). Highly competitive stipends are determined by degree(s) and years of relevant postdoctoral experience; annual increases are available. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, is one of 27 research institutes and centers that comprise the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
