Job Title: Reproductive Epidemiology, Dr. Donna Baird
Description:

Applications are invited for a reproductive epidemiology postdoctoral fellowship in the Epidemiology Branch at the NIH National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The position is available in a program that focuses on studies of fertility, pregnancy, and uterine fibroids with the goal of identifying risk factors and understanding developmental processes that might lead eventually to prevention and therapy. There are existing data from questionnaires, biomarkers, MRI images, and genetic markers for ongoing analyses. There is opportunity for developing and carrying out field work within the context of a large prospective study of fibroids. Strength in epidemiologic methods required and biology background a plus.

NIEHS and the Epidemiology Branch have received national recognition for trainee programs. The Scientist consistently lists NIEHS among the top places for postdoctoral training. EB investigators are leaders in the scientific community, with past Presidents of the American College of Epidemiology, American Epidemiological Society, Society for Epidemiologic Research, and Society for Pediatric Epidemiologic Research; as well as Editors of the American Journal of Epidemiology, Epidemiology, and Pediatric Epidemiology. This stimulating environment presents excellent opportunities for young scientists developing their research careers. Fellows participate in interdisciplinary and/or multicenter collaborations and career development activities. Previous trainees have positions with schools of public health and medicine, NIH, CDC, and industry.

Applicants must have a doctoral degree (or be near completion) in epidemiology or a related field, or an M.D. plus epidemiology experience or training (e.g., M.P.H.). Highly competitive stipends are determined by degree(s) and years of relevant postdoctoral experience; annual increases are available. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, is one of 27 research institutes and centers that comprise the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The mission of the NIEHS is to reduce the burden of human illness and disability by understanding how the environment influences the development and progression of human disease.

The NIEHS traces its roots to 1966, when the U.S. Surgeon General announced the establishment of the Division of Environmental Health Sciences within the NIH. In 1969, the division was elevated to full NIH institute status. Since then, the NIEHS has evolved to its present status as a world leader in environmental health sciences, with an impressive record of important scientific accomplishments and a proud history of institutional achievements and growth under the leadership of former directors Paul Kotin, M.D. (1969–1971), David P. Rall, M.D., Ph.D. (1971–1990), and Kenneth Olden, Ph.D. (1991–2005).

Today, under the guidance of its 2006–2011 Strategic Plan, the NIEHS is expanding and accelerating its contributions to scientific knowledge of human health and the environment, and to the health and well-being of people everywhere.
