Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow – Experimental Physics/Chemistry
Description:

The Chemical Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) offers a unique postdoctoral opportunity to work in a highly interactive program that combines the joint efforts of experimental and theoretical physicists in the Atomic, Molecular and Optical Sciences (AMOS) group in combination with the Ultrafast X-ray Science Lab (UXSL). The postdoc will conduct research on the photo double ionization of small atoms and molecules using momentum spectroscopy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assemble, test, debug and use a new apparatus to perform experiments with ultrafast laser fields (high harmonic lasers) and participate in ongoing projects, which deal with the ionization and fragmentation of atoms and molecules, using synchrotron radiation at the Advanced Light Source at Berkeley Lab.
  • Contribute to our high safety standards and the infrastructure of the working group (computer network, lab improvements, PR etc.)
  • May teach coworkers, students, and interns.
  • May prepare research publications (oral and written) on experimental results.
  • May Communicate results in group meetings and participate in professional activities, as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Experimental Chemistry, Physics or related field
  • Engineering skills to set up complex high vacuum chambers that house electron and ion spectrometers
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a collaborative research environment
  • Expertise in position sensitive detector techniques, short-time metrology, computer programming (simulation and analysis) and momentum spectroscopy is highly desirable.

Note: This is a one-year appointment in experimental physics with a possibility of a one-year extension depending on availability of funds and performance.

How to Apply:  Please submit a single attachment that includes a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a short statement of research interests, and the names of at least two references.

About Us

The new Ultrafast X-ray Science Lab carries out cutting edge research in photoionization processes of atoms and molecules with femtosecond and high harmonic laser pulses. The dynamics of fragmenting atoms and molecules by high harmonics photon impact shall be imaged with Cold-Target Recoil-Ion Momentum Spectroscopy (COLTRIMS)/Reaction Microscopy.
