Job Title: Biologist Postdoc Fellow- Single Cell Genomics
Description:

The Single Cell Genomics Program at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA has an exciting Postdoctoral Research position available. Will work on Single Cell Genome Projects and be responsible for the establishment of methodologies that will enable the selective isolation, whole genome amplification and shotgun sequencing of single microbial cells. Research will concentrate on cells of interest based on phylogeny and desired activity, ie. cellulose degradation. Will also establish high throughput methods for large-scale single cell amplifications and post-amplification screening assays and perform Phylogenetic and functional diversity studies and comparative sequence analysis. Position reports to the Single-Cell Genomics Program Leader.

Specific Job Duties

Essential -
- Create, design, and execute experiments that will enable the selective isolation and shotgun sequencing of microbial cells of interest, based on phylogeny and desired activity.
- Develop fluorescent labeling methods, 16S rRNA-based and single copy gene-based for target single cell isolations by micromanipulation and/or FACS.
- Develop high throughput methods for large-scale single cell amplifications.
- Develop post-MDA screening processes for large-scale single cell experiments.
- Involvement in single cell genomics method improvements.
- Analyze rRNA sequence data and genomic shotgun sequence data: build phylogenetic trees, analyze annotated genomes, and perform comparative genome analyzes.

Marginal -
- Keep an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook.
- Summarize experiment results in reports and papers submitted for publication and present analysis results at scientific meetings.
- Attend and present data at group meetings.

Key Success Factors

Essential -
- PhD in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or related field.
- High degree of experience with fluorescence microscopy and FISH.
- Knowledge of Molecular Biology Techniques such as: PCR, qPCR, Cloning, Multiple Displacement Amplification.
- Familiar with fluorescent-activated cell sorting and micromanipulation.
- Knowledge in microbial ecology, physiology, biochemistry, biogeochemistry, molecular biology.
- Familiar with basic sequence analysis tools, ie. ARB, BLAST, CLUSTALW, PFAM.
- Experience using PC, Mac and/or UNIX operating systems.
- Ability to apply technology skills in troubleshooting problems.
- Excellent interpersonal skills for working in a diverse team environment and strong written and verbal communication skills to present findings at group meetings and conferences and publish results.
- Strong organizational and record keeping skills to record experiment results and analyze data.
- Ability to interact with a variety of technical and scientific personnel including Research Associates, Scientists and Software Engineers.

Marginal -
- Experience in annotation and analysis of genomes, pathways and families of genes and proteins.
-Experience with second generation sequencing platforms (454, Illumina).
