Description:

The Global Security (GS) Principal Directorate, National Security Analysis and Technology Division (NSATD) has immediate openings for analysts in a variety of disciplines to work on Homeland Security biodefense issues relating to sensitive, politically significant national security topics in the Biodefense Knowledge Center (BKC) within S Program. As an integral member of an interdisciplinary team, the analyst will perform analyses of biotechnologies, biological agents, and world events in support of counterterrorism and other biodefense topics. As a contributor, the analyst will integrate information from all sources into a finished written product, and make formal oral and written presentations to technical and programmatic audiences. The analyst will contribute to the generation of research topics and aid in program development. Will report to the Chem/Bio Science Group Leader.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Conduct research on sensitive, politically significant national security topics, concentrating on, but not limited to, biological sciences, and employ classified information, including locating and assessing information related to the topics under study.
- Participate as a team member in formal and ad hoc groups assembled to address pressing Homeland Security biodefense issues with strong technical and policy components.
- Analyze current events in assigned areas and prioritize and validate data related to relevant topics.
- Contribute to the development of a focused research program in assigned areas that address key science and technology and policy questions.
- Prepare written analyses and verbal briefings that capture and communicate research results.
- Respond to occasional biodefense questions that require a rapid response off-hours. (The analyst is typically on call one week every one or two months).
- Travel as necessary to conduct and represent analyses to sponsors and consumers.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- DVM, MD, or Ph.D. in a biological science, or related discipline, or an equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge.
- Background in virology, microbiology, immunology, epidemiology, agricultural biology or other area of science and medicine relevant to biodefense.
- Knowledge of pathogenic organisms, zoonotic diseases, or toxins.
- Experience in conducting biological sciences research.
- Ability to understand the technical aspects of Homeland Security biodefense issues including both the technical and policy components.
- Experience producing finished analytic work based on all available sources of information and under minimal supervision.
- Experience in providing oral presentations on work produced to sponsors and consumers.
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to prepare written analyses and make formal oral and written presentations that capture research results.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
