Job Title: Postdoctoral position in surface science on high temperature oxides for fuel cells
Description:

One postdoctoral position for studying the surface electronic and chemical nature and oxygen electrocatalysis mechanisms on dense thin-film electrodes for solid oxide electrochemical devices for electricity generation, namely solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). Starting date as early as November, 2009, and preferably latest by January 2010. Review of applications will start immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The primary research goal is to understand and tailor the electronic behavior of transition metal oxide electrode surfaces and interfaces using advanced surface science tools. Characterization and analysis approach will include the coupling of the high-resolution spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Particularly important is the use of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy, and other scanning probe and UHV techniques. The tasks will include extending and implementing these tools to new domains, under the laboratory controlled conditions of temperature, pressure, and potential representative of the in situ conditions of SOFC oxygen electrodes. The position will involve close collaboration with several MIT faculty members. More information on the research scope can be found at http://web.mit.edu/yildizgroup. Responsibilities include carrying out excellent independent research, writing publications, presentations and reports, working with graduate students in the group, and interacting with sponsors. Very highly motivated and hardworking candidates with a strong background and PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related field are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Experience with STM and UHV surface characterization tools is desirable, but not a requirement. Please send CV, a representative publication (if possible), and contact information of three references to Bilge Yildiz (byildiz “at” mit.edu). Review of applications will start immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

To apply: Please send CV, a representative publication (if possible), and contact information of three references to Bilge Yildiz (byildiz “at” mit.edu).
