Job Title: Mouse Models for Obesity, Dr. Jack Yanovski
Description:

Background
The Unit on Growth and Obesity of the Program in Developmental Endocrinology and Genetics, NICHD conducts translational research on genetic conditions that affect the susceptibility for obesity. Our interest is in understanding the biochemical and molecular mechanisms by which defects in appetite-regulation lead to obesity, and then in applying this information for the care of pediatric patients.

Potential Projects
A postdoctoral research fellowship position is available to study murine models of obesity. The fellow will use previously generated murine models with alterations in genes such as MC3R and BDNF, as well as lead generation of novel transgenic and knock-in mice. Potential projects involve:

  1. Exon-specific knockouts of BNDF to help elucidate how obesity develops in WAGR syndrome, recently delineated in our lab (NEJM 359:918);
  2. Investigation of mechanisms through which MC3R affects body weight (Diabetes. 2005; 54: 2663-7);
A creative, multi-disciplinary, cell and molecular biological approach is encouraged. A wide variety of state-of-the-art research tools are available either directly within the laboratory or elsewhere on the NIH Bethesda campus.

Requirements
Candidates must have a record of outstanding research productivity and have demonstrated familiarity with molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology. Expertise with murine models and experience in management of a mouse colony are strongly preferred. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or M.D. and less than 5 years of postdoctoral experience. The scientific atmosphere of the NIH Intramural Program offers multiple opportunities for education and training.

To apply, candidates should click on the button below or send a copy of their CV, bibliography, and contact details including phone number and e-mail address for at least 2 references to: Jack A. Yanovski, M.D., Ph.D., Head, UGO/PDEGEN, NICHD, NIH, yanovskj@mail.nih.gov.

The position is available after October 1, 2009.

The NIH is dedicated to building a diverse community in its training and employment programs.

The NICHD was initially established to investigate the broad aspects of human development as a means of understanding developmental disabilities, including mental retardation, and the events that occur during pregnancy. Today, the Institute conducts and supports research on all stages of human development, from preconception to adulthood, to better understand the health of children, adults, families, and communities.
