Job Title: Accelerator Physicist Research Scientist
Description:

Be part of an exciting R&D program!

The Accelerator and Fusion Research Division has an exciting opportunity for an experimental Accelerator Physicist Research Scientist with experience in electron guns and injectors, to participate in design, building, and testing of a high brightness photoinjector. The successful applicant will be expected to make significant contributions to the Advanced Photoinjector Experiment-APEX- a high-brightness and high repetition rate injector for future light source applications. APEX is part of the LBNL R&D program for a next-generation light source; other activities include high-performance photocathode development, design of high-fidelity beam delivery systems for a soft X-ray FEL array, and design of seeded FEL techniques expanding the scientific reach of future light sources.

As an Accelerator Physicist Research Scientist, you will:

  • Design, plan, and carry out forefront research experiments on particle beams as part of a team of scientists, engineers, students, and technical support personnel
  • Design electron beam diagnostics systems for the APEX project
  • Contribute to photocathode laser systems development
  • Integrate hardware systems into the experimental area
  • Develop and execute experimental plans

Key Success Factors

  • Ph.D. or an equivalent Physics background
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in experimental accelerator physics and data acquisition and analysis
  • Research experience relevant to high-brightness electron sources and diagnostics as well as simulation codes for beam transport physics
  • Proven ability to design, plan, and carry out forefront research experiments on particle beams
  • Ability to design and carry out independent research
  • Documented evidence of ability to summarize research results for publication and presentations
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with technical and scientific staff
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Familiarity with major accelerator systems and components
  • Familiarity with photocathode laser systems desirable
  • Computer programming skills and familiarity with accelerator physics at operating machines are desirable

Notes

This is a three-year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

Employer:

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has been a leader in science and engineering research for more than 70 years. Located on a 200 acre site in the hills above the University of California's Berkeley campus, adjacent to the San Francisco Bay, Berkeley Lab holds the distinction of being the oldest of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Laboratories. The Lab is managed by the University of California, operating with an annual budget of more than $500 million (FY2004) and a staff of about 3,800 employees, including more than 500 students.

Berkeley Lab conducts unclassified research across a wide range of scientific disciplines with key efforts in fundamental studies of the universe; quantitative biology; nanoscience; new energy systems and environmental solutions; and the use of integrated computing as a tool for discovery. It is organized into 17 scientific divisions and hosts four DOE national user facilities.
