Job Title: Chemist Postdoctoral Fellow - Glenn T. Seaborg Center
Description:

The Glenn T. Seaborg Center at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is accepting applications for a postdoctoral position working in the area of design, development and characterization of ligands for lanthanide and actinide decorporation.  The postdoc will actively collaborate with members of the Actinide Chemistry Group to evaluate the coordination chemistry properties and in vitro and in vivo biological activity of selective lanthanide and actinide chelators.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop equipment and techniques to systematically characterize the solution chemistry of new ligands and their corresponding lanthanide and actinide complexes in vitro.
  • Extend the use of spectroscopic techniques to the analysis and speciation determination of ligands and corresponding complexes in biological samples.
  • Contribute to high safety standards and infrastructure of the Actinide Chemistry Group.
  • Prepare research presentations (both oral and written) on experimental results.
  • Communicate results and participate in seminars and group meetings.
  • Assist in directing graduate students and undergraduate assistants.

Well-qualified candidates will have one or more of the following criteria:

  • Experience in handling radionuclides, particularly actinides, and glove-box operations
  • Experience in the development and application of non-routine analytical techniques for characterizing the solution chemistry of metal complexes (potentiometric, spectrophotometric and spectroscopic techniques)
  • Background in inorganic/organometallic spectroscopy (UV-Vis, fluorescence, mass, NMR, absorption), and/or solution chemistry
In addition to at least one of the above, the following are required qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related discipline, with no more than 3 years previous postdoctoral experience
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment and achievement documented by scientific publications and presentations
  • Evidence of ability to work as an independent researcher with a high level of scientific judgment
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and effectively communicate with colleagues and peers within a diverse research team

Note: This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal for up to 2 years based upon satisfactory performance, continuing availability of funds, and on-going operational needs. Multiple postdocs may be hired.

How to Apply:Please submit a single attachment that includes a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and the names of at least two references.

About Us

The Actinide Chemistry Group of the Glenn T. Seaborg Center studies the physics and chemistry of the actinides. Research activities include both basic and applied topics, for instance, in gas-phase molecules, fundamental magnetic and electronic interactions, soft x-ray spectroscopy, coordination chemistry, as well as in separation science and waste form technology.
