| Job Title: | Physicist Postdoctoral Fellow – Ultrafast ARPES |
| Description: |
The Materials Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) invites applications for up to two (2) Physicist Postdoctoral Fellow positions as part of a new program in Ultrafast Angle-Resolved Photoemission (Ultrafast ARPES). The postdoc/s will have the opportunity to help develop a new and unique laboratory that combines the powerful aspects of ARPES and ultrafast spectroscopy, and to conduct research with this new capability to investigate complex materials. This postdoc position is connected to the Ultrafast Materials effort at the division, and will include collaborations with the Advanced Light Source Division as part of a team with extensive expertise in ultrafast science, photoemission, and condensed matter physics. Ultrafast ARPES has the potential to provide unprecedented insight into condensed matter dynamics by resolving non-equilibrium carriers and the ultrafast evolution of the electronic band structure directly in energy and momentum space. Important scientific questions can be addressed in correlated or nanoscale materials, by following the electronic structure dynamics after perturbative excitation on time-scales shorter than the underlying correlations (femtoseconds to picoseconds). Phenomena of interest include studies of photo-induced phase transitions between charge-ordered phases, Cooper pair kinetics in superconductors, electronic dynamics after THz vibrational excitation, or the dispersion of thermally inaccessible quasiparticles. Key Responsibilities:
Qualifications (in addition to one of the above):
Note - This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal for up to three years based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and on-going operational needs. About Ultrafast Materials Science at Berkeley LabUltrafast materials research at Berkeley Lab’s Materials Sciences Division applies advanced ultrafast spectroscopy techniques to important fundamental challenges in condensed matter physics. A key focus of our program is to understand and control novel properties and emergent phenomena in complex materials, with a present focus on strongly-correlated electron systems and nanoscale materials where interactions among charges and between charge, spin, and phonons lead to emergent properties, novel physics, quasiparticles, and exotic phases. The research employs advanced ultrafast laser sources and measurement techniques, with laser pulse duration reaching the few-cycle limit and with a spectral range from the terahertz to the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectral region (see also http://www.lbl.gov/msd/programs/3si/1.1uf.html) Berkeley Lab is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory located in Berkeley, California. It conducts multidisciplinary research with key efforts in fundamental studies of the universe, physics, bioscience, nanoscience, clean energy, energy efficiency, the environment, and the use of computing as a tool for discovery. 11 Nobel laureates are associated with Berkeley Lab, which is managed by the University of California.
