Job Title: Postdoctoral position in neurobiology/membrane trafficking
Description:

As a further support of our research team we are seeking a

Postdoc

(position is available for 3+2 years and suitable for Habilitation )

The Institute for Biochemistry I at the Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena, Germany, provides a stimulating research environment with excellent technical equipment in a recently completely reconstructed building right in the center of one of the top-ranking and most lively biotech cities of Germany (ranked 2nd in the career atlas of all German cities – right behind Munich!).

The aim of our internationally well-known research team is to gain a molecular understanding of neuronal network formation, function and plasticity. We are especially interested in revealing how membrane trafficking processes, such as endocytosis and vesicle recycling, are functionally interconnected to the actin cyto¬skeleton and specialized cytomatrix structures, which are present on both the pre- and the postsynaptic side of the synaptic cleft and are underlying the plasma membrane.
We have identified several molecular players at the interface of actin and membrane trafficking. It seems that these proteins serve as organizing elements ensuring the high efficiency of regulated secretory cells, such as neurons (Gundelfinger, Kessels, Qualmann, 2003, Nat. Rev. Cell. Biol.).
We are characterizing the role of these modulator proteins in membrane trafficking, actin dynamics and neuromorphogenesis as well as synapse formation and reorganization. This provides deep insights into general fundamental processes of life and into how the special requirements of neuronal cells during neuronal morphogenesis and during synapse formation, function and plasticity are met – crucial functions for the formation of the complex brain of eukaryotes and higher brain functions, such as learning and memory formation (e.g. see Dharmalingam et al. 2009 J Neurosci; Haeckel et al. 2008; J Neurosci; Pinyol et al. 2007 PLoS ONE; Ahuja et al. 2007 Cell).

We are currently expanding our analyses by also using genetic methods and are seeking a productive addition to our team for phenotypical analyses of gene-knock-out-animals and for studying membrane trafficking processes in primary neuronal cultures.
Besides a solid theoretical and practical knowledge of modern (neuronal) cell biology, applicants should therefore have experience in the generation and analyses of knock-out mice and in studying neuronal membrane trafficking processes with advanced, modern microscopy.
Candidates should be distinguished by a high motivation to succeed in science but it is also crucial that they are able to integrate themselves into our team smoothly and are kind, efficient and reliable team-players.

"That Jena scores so well is the result of a successful combination of research, education and economics."
"The university: 25% of all inhabitants of this city are students and Jena thus is a very young and lively city. The job market is booming."
"Jena is well-known as internationally leading place for optics. Companies, such as Carl Zeiss, Jenoptik and Schott set global standards."
