Job Title: 2 Ph.D. positions in biochemistry and cell & neurobiology
Description:

The institute for Biochemistry I at the FSU Jena is seeking

2 Ph.D./doctoral students

with interest in the

Identification and characterization of thus far unknown protein interactions of modulators of the actin cytoskeleton and vesicle formation machineries

Our aim is to unravel the functional interface of membranes and the actin cytoskeleton and to understand the dynamics of both of these functions, which are indispensable for the live of eukaryotic cells. This work provides deep insights in the formation, and plasticity of the defined cell morphologies, which underly the formations of organs and tissues of multicellular organisms. On the subcellular level our work leads to a deeper understanding of
- the mechanisms of membrane alterations by membrane trafficking processes (endocytosis, receptor-recycling, vesicle formation at other cellular compartments),
- membrane topology and cell morphology modulations via the forces of actin polymerization
- membrane topology chances by direct association of lipid-binding proteins that can bend or even tabulate membranes.

As a further support of our team we are seeking to highly motivated Ph.D. students with excellent education in natural sciences and sound experience in modern methods of molecular biology, protein and lipid biochemistry, advanced light microscopy (high resolution, confocal, time lapse, FRAP) and cell and neurobiological assays for studying membrane trafficking and/or cytoskeletal processes.

The projects are supported by an excellent technical infrastructure available directly in the institute. With the intensive technical and scientific supervision we provide and with the stimulating research environment in the institute and at the inner city campus of the FSU and also at the surrounding research institutes a Ph.D. with us holds all prerequisites for successful scientific work in the young and lively university town of Jena (ranked 2nd in the career atlas of all german cities - right behind Munich).
