Job Title: Electrochemical Engineer/Scientist
Description:

Be Part of Something Great!

The fuel-cell program at LBNL has an opening for an Electrochemical Engineer/Scientist to oversee and conduct experimental investigations into the behavior of solid-oxide fuel cells and related electrochemical technologies. The individual will also serve as co-investigator for existing fuel-cell projects.

The Electrochemical Engineer/Scientist will:
• Conduct research aimed at the iterative production of electrode materials and full cells to improve power density, impurity tolerance, and lifetime.
• Conduct in-situ electrochemical diagnostics and post-mortem physical/chemical characterization; production of test stands, test rigs, and other equipment to enable research; identification, screening, selection, and diagnosis of cell material candidates; and preparation and evaluation of improved coatings for reticulated molten metal filters.
• Represent the program in interactions with existing and potential project sponsors and licensees;
• Interact with CEO-level officers, management, and technical staff at sponsoring companies and agencies.
• Contribute to writing funding proposals, guiding research directions, managing existing activities including preparing annual reports, and presenting progress at annual DOE review meetings and similar events.
• Interact within the LBNL community to develop new research directions and collaborations.
• Actively publish research in peer-reviewed journals.
• Coordinate and manage environmental, health and safety best practices.
• Work on the polymer-electrolyte-fuel-cell characterization tasks, as needed.
• Participate in professional societies and conferences, as necessary.
• Lead and train postdoctoral associates and junior colleagues, as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or closely related field and at least 5 years of relevant experience.
• Experience with experimental characterization and operation of solid-oxide fuel cells.
• Experience in ceramic and metals processing at high temperatures, metal-supported and anode-supported SOFC fabrication and testing, and porous structure fabrication.
• Experience with characterization techniques including ones such as AC impedance spectroscopy, SEM, EDS, XRD, and dilatometry.
• Experience with reticulated foam filters for molten metal filtration; rheology measurement and control in aqueous slurry systems; and mechanical properties determination for ceramic coatings.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
• Proven track record of research progress, including the ability to develop, map out, and execute research plans.
• Strong publication and patent record.
• A minimum of two years of experience in a lead role is preferred.
• Experience with brazing and other metal joining technologies desirable.
• Experience with batteries and other electrochemical devices.
