Manager, Research and Development

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) is a membership organization of independently owned insurance companies and is the strategic leader behind the Blue Cross and Blue Shield brand, one of the most recognized brands in America and the choice of over 100 Million Americans for their healthcare coverage.  There are 39 Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Plans across the country and internationally which depend on BCBSA's consulting and operational support, enabling them to move proactively to gain a competitive edge in their respective markets. 

The Manager of Research and Development applies experience in using a variety of research methodologies to produce high quality, leading edge information for BCBS Plan executives and BCBSA business units.  Leads and participates on project teams to provide direction on the use of sophisticated quantitative studies using both survey data and claims based data in order to advance market understanding, competitive positioning and business performance of the Blues.  Uses extensive theoretical and practical understanding of a variety of statistical methods to design research projects that meet appropriate scientific standards and to diagnose and resolve analytic problems when they arise.  Delivers effective presentations and written communications related to current market, customer and competitor trends.  Builds and maintains effective business relationships in a cross-functional, fast-paced environment.

Required Basic Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years experience as a research methodologist / statistician addressing marketing and business issues - preferably in healthcare
  • A masters degree in the social sciences or statistics is required, with a PhD strongly preferred
  • Formal training in advanced quantitative techniques, including linear modeling, choice modeling, latent variable modeling, time series, and non-parametric estimation techniques
  • Experience in designing and implementing survey sampling methods including stratified and cluster sampling
  • Demonstrated ability to generate appropriate hypotheses and design studies to effectively validate those hypotheses
  • Experience managing mid-sized and large research projects
  • Proficiency in SAS programming
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)


Preferred Basic Qualifications

  • Proficiency in STATA
  • Effective communication skills (written and oral) in dealing with all levels of staff and management
  • Ability to acquire, organize and synthesize both qualitative and quantitative data to identify key findings
  • Experience managing and developing staff
  • Strong project and people management skills
  • Ability to lead client presentations and make presentations to internal staff members
  • Ability to teach fellow research staff how to conduct complex quantitative analyses
