Job Title: Biologist Project Sci/Engr
Description:

Job Title:  Biologist Project Sci/Engr
Req Number:  23700
Division:  Life Sciences
Department:  Cancer & DNA Damage Responses

Be part of something great!

The Life Sciences Division has an opportunity for a Biologist Project Scientist to work with the Principal Investigator to use cultured human cells to study mammary gland biology and breast cancer. Identify the consequences of intrinsic and microenvironmental changes on cell growth, organization, and function. Design and perform experiments utilizing molecular biology, biochemistry, and immunohistochemistry to understand regulation of cell growth, cell survival, and telomerase activity in finite lifespan and immortally transformed cells.

As a Biologist Project Scientist, you will:
• Participate in projects using cultured human mammary epithelial cells to characterize the consequences of radiation and/or aberrantly expressed genes on breast cell growth, organization, and function.
• Design and perform experiments utilizing standard molecular biology techniques, such as protein biochemistry assays, westerns, gel electrophoresis, PCR, RT-PCR, q-PCR, flow cytometry, and ChIP to understand regulation of cell growth, organization, and function in finite lifespan, immortally, and tumorigenically transformed cells.
• Work with the project principal investigator (PI) and supervisor in setting research directions.
• Present formal and informal overviews of progress in experimental work at project team meetings and to meet funding agency requirements.
• Make research presentations at local and national scientific meetings and publish research findings in peer reviewed scientific journals.
• Train staff in laboratory protocols, instruments and data analysis.
• Perform tissue culture and establish primary cultures from both normal and tumor breast tissue samples.
• Prepare results for publication in scientific journals and presentations at seminars.

Key Success Factors
• Experience in standard molecular and cellular biological protocols, troubleshooting, and implementation of assays in cells and tissues from human sources.
• Experience with primary human mammary epithelial cell culture system and establishing primary culture from breast tissue.
• Experience with chromatin immune-precipitation and other epigenetic marker assays.
• Experience in radiation biology and statistical analysis.
• Experience in biomedical data analyses, summarization of findings, and preparation of presentations, reports, and research manuscripts, or equivalent.
• Ability to work with guidance of principal investigator and collaborators.
• Ability to conduct experiments independently, maintain appropriate records and manage data.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.
• Demonstrated productivity in biomedical research as evidenced by first-authorship of peer-reviewed manuscripts.
• Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, Molecular and Cellular Biology, or Biochemistry or related field plus four or more years of advanced experience in human mammary epithelial cell biology.
• Familiarity with generation and analysis of gene expression data.
• Experience in culture of human cells.

Notes
This is a full-time one-year Term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent on satisfactory performance, the availability of work and funding.
