The fuel-cell program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has an exciting opportunity for an electrochemical engineer to simulate mathematically the behavior of polymer-electrolyte fuel cells under both steady state and transient conditions. You will be in charge of developing and refining mathematical models related to ageing and durability studies in addition to transport phenomena under various operating conditions. The position will also entail model validation, collaboration with industrial and research partners, and verification and explanation of predicted trends seen in experimental data.

You will also work on experimental characterization of fuel-cell component layers and cell performance. In addition, you will have the opportunity to interact with the LBNL electrochemistry community (with extensive experience in batteries, modeling of batteries and fuel cells, electrode material synthesis, spectroscopy, and cell design) to aid in electrochemistry research. Such research encompasses both battery design and fuel-cell development including advanced diagnostic measurements.

Key Success Factors
• Recent PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or closely related field.
• Experience with mathematical modeling (i.e., continuum modeling) including in the application of transport phenomena in polymer-electrolyte-fuel-cell systems.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

Desired Traits
• Expertise with finite-element methods and Fortran.
• The ability to perform well in team research.
• Knowledge of electrochemistry and fuel-cell diagnostic methods and materials.
