PhD Fellowships in Fuel Cell and Battery Modeling
 
2 PhD positions for: 
1.numerical modeling of lithium ion batteries via multiscale finite element methods; 
2.modeling of fuel cells using heterogeneous multiscale method. 
The ideal candidate should: 
• rank in the top 5% of his/her class; 
• have a 5 year degree (or BSc + MSc) in engineering, physics, physical chemistry or 
mathematics; 
• have previous experience with numerical methods for PDEs and C++ programming; 
• speak English fluently (knowledge of German is not necessary); 
• be highly motivated and have an interest in energy related research. 
The PhD thesis will be carried out at the newly founded Heidelberg Graduate School for 
Mathematical Methods for the Sciences (HGS MathComp). 
HGS MathComp is the sole excellence school in applied mathematics funded by the 
German Science Foundation. HGS MathComp is located within the Interdisciplinary 
Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) of the University of Heidelberg (best in Germany 
according to the Times Higher Education rankings).
 
Financial Support 
Funding for PhD is made possible through HGS MathComp fellowships. 
Support includes: 
•payment of tuition and fees, 
•a stipend (approximately 1500 €/month after tax), 
•travel funds contingent upon thesis progress.
