Job Title: Materials Postdoctoral Fellow
Description:

Job Title:  Materials Postdoctoral Fellow
Req Number:  23512
Division:  Environmental Energy Tech
Department:  Energy Analysis

Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory is providing solutions to global environmental problems! Are you someone who can make a difference on our team?

The Heat Island Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is seeking to hire a Materials Postdoctoral Fellow with a strong background in materials science, chemistry, or physics to work on an exciting new project that will characterize the soiling and weathering of exterior building surfaces. As a part of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division, the Heat Island Group studies ways to save energy, slow global warming and improve air quality by mitigating urban heat island effects.

These aging effects are important because they reduce the reflectivity of building surfaces, increase the amount of heat absorbed by buildings, and thus increase building energy use. This project will involve the study of physical-chemical properties of soiling agents, their interactions with surfaces and their influences on the reflectance of exposed materials.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with other scientists at LBNL, working in diverse areas such as atmospheric sciences, building technologies, indoor environment, advanced energy technologies, energy analysis, materials sciences and chemical sciences. The position will also entail interaction with industrial and research partners, and presentation of results in internal meetings and at conferences.

The Materials Postdoctoral Fellow will work closely with scientists and engineers in our group, executing field and laboratory experiments to:
• Design and optimize material soiling procedures.
• Quantitatively evaluate the chemical composition of soiling agents.
• Evaluate radiative changes in soiled surfaces.

Qualifications:
• Recent Ph.D. in materials science, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, physics or a related discipline.
• Relevant experience working with as many as possible of the following:
• Materials surface chemistry;
• Particulate matter air quality measurements and sampling;
• Trace contaminant chemical analysis; and
• Measurement of surface radiative properties, such as reflectance and emittance.
• Ability to work as a part of an interdisciplinary team.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Some computer programming skills.
• Creative/innovative thinking abilities.

Notes
This is a full-time, one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon job performance, ongoing operational needs and continuation of funding.
