Job Title: Computational Scientist Postdoctoral Fellow
Description:

Key Skills

Theoretical physics, condense matter, quantum chemistry, material science, solar energy applications, nanosystems, nanocontacts, inorganic and organic composite systems, localizations, exciton, atomic structures, ab initio

Summary

The Scientific Computing Group in the Computational Research Division has a postdoctoral fellow opening in the area of material science simulation for solar energy applications. This position is supported by the Helios project (http://pbd.lbl.gov/energy/) at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. The successful candidate will study the electronic structure and optical properties of nanosystems and inorganic/organic composite systems. The physical problems include the electron/hole localizations, exciton and charge transport in nanosystems, exciton dissociation, semiconductor/metal nanocontacts, nano surface and interface atomic structures. The incumbent will use a variety of large scale ab initio computational tools to study the above problems.

Duties

  • Perform large scale electronic structure calculations for solar energy related physical problems.
  • Collaborate with experimental groups in the Helios program; solve problems related to the experiments.
  • Participate in Helios-related activities, report the research results in Helios-related meetings and seminars.
  • Publish research results in peer reviewed scientific journals, and present them in scientific conferences.
Qualifications

A recent Ph.D. (within the last three years), in the areas of Theoretical Physics, Condensed Matter, or Quantum Chemistry. Experience in large-scale electronic structure simulation is preferred. Experience in nanostructure simulation, solar energy applications, and ab initio electronic structure calculations is desirable.

Notes

This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal for up to three years based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and on-going operational needs.

Hiring for this position is contingent upon receipt of funding.

Employer:

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has been a leader in science and engineering research for more than 70 years. Located on a 200 acre site in the hills above the University of California's Berkeley campus, adjacent to the San Francisco Bay, Berkeley Lab holds the distinction of being the oldest of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Laboratories. The Lab is managed by the University of California, operating with an annual budget of more than $500 million (FY2004) and a staff of about 3,800 employees, including more than 500 students.

Berkeley Lab conducts unclassified research across a wide range of scientific disciplines with key efforts in fundamental studies of the universe; quantitative biology; nanoscience; new energy systems and environmental solutions; and the use of integrated computing as a tool for discovery. It is organized into 17 scientific divisions and hosts four DOE national user facilities.
